Appleton Campbell began in 1976 with one truck run by Jim Appleton. He had retired from a plumbing and heating company with just a tool bag in hand. His son worked full time for the telephone company while helping him with the bookkeeping. His grandson, Mike Appleton, current president of the company, worked as his helper in the field.

I would not recommend Appleton Campbell to anyone. My A/C unit was not working and I reached out to them for service. They quoted $69 for the diagnostic fee. The tech arrived and told me to start the A/C. He needed to change battery on his tools and went back to his truck. In the meantime, the condenser overheated and stopped. The tech came back and told me to begin diagnosis, he needs to first cool down the condenser by spraying cold water over the condenser and asked for a garden hose.
He mentioned the diagnostic does not include charges to cool down the condenser and I would have to pay additional $89. When I refused the tech mentions that he is not here to work for free and should not be expected to cool the condenser. In short, he did not diagnose the problem, but insisted I pay the $69 service fee to come out. He was very unprofessional and rude. Everyone should save themselves the hassle and look for a different company for A/C repairs.

The whole experience was pleasant. I was very impressed with the overall professionalism experienced by all staff members starting from scheduling the service to the electrician who performed the service and will definitely be a repeat customer. To start, I received a phone call in less than an hour from submitting my online request and was able to get an appointment within 24 hours.
The day of the service the electrician arrived within the scheduled timeframe and I also received a text 20 minutes prior to prepare for arrival. I appreciated the heads up. Once the electrician arrived he was very courteous. He let me explain the desired function of the service needed. He then talked me through the options and provided me with the optimal solution.
He provided quotes on-site and was able to knock out the job that day. I have to say that this electrician went above and beyond to take the time to all of the explain codes and options to me. I like knowing why something is preferred over another option and how it works. For me this gave me the comfort needed to move forward and feel good about moving forward. Again, super happy with my service and would highly recommend to others looking for help with home projects!

Shane and Garrett worked at our house to install recess lights in kitchen and high-ceiling family room. They both did a wonderful job from start to finish and demonstrated professionalism in every part of the work they had completed in one day. We thank both of them and look forward for any new electrical projects. Services: Outdoor lighting installation, Installation

They responded quickly to my situation, but when they got here, they attempted to up sell me a new well pressure tank and a new filter. Neither of which I needed. The pressure tank was fine and the filter only needed to be backwashed. They gave me a quote for just under $10, 000. Yes, that's not a typo. 10K for basically 1/2 of a day's work to install a bunch of stuff I don't need.
I got a call the next day asking about my experience and I explained it all to the woman on the phone. She was shocked and would relay all of this to management. I was a manager for years, and employees don't try to pull this crap on their own.

We'd like to thank all of the caring and professional staff. What started as a clogged main waste line (or so we thought) turned into a 6 day job to replace the failed cast iron pipes in our basement floor and out to the septic tank. It was a huge undertaking. All of the staff thoroughly explained all of the work details, were extremely courteous and we would highly recommend Appleton Campbell.
They had the right staff, tools, machines and expertise to get the job completed as quickly as possible. We would like to extend an extra thank you to Keith and Don. They were here all day each day, doing grueling work but always had a smile. Thanks for everything.

This was a huge job with the installation of three separate units for our home. They also had to install an air handler in a crawl space. The team did a fantastic job. Very professional, friendly and skilled. Above and beyond: They identified a flaw in the existing drainage of condensation run off, returning a second day to establish a new drainage system. High quality, exceptional, kind hearted group. Would definitely recommend.

The team of Chris, Baker, Keith, Tim, and Patrick were terrific. My well pump needed to be replaced, as well as the pressure tank. It was a lot of work, on a day with miserable weather. The ground was saturated and they had to bring in a heavy crane truck. They were careful to lay down truck mats, which largely protected my yard. They were also cheerful and respectful, in addition to being very professional.
They did a great, quick job under less than ideal circumstances, and I really appreciated it. They answered my questions, and made good suggestions for the future health of my well pump.

Roger and Austin were on time, professional, personable, and knowledgeable. They took their time to install and make sure our new furnace was operating properly before leaving so make sure we did not have another night with no heat. They made to sure walk us through the work they had done and explained how our new system operated. Overall, our experience with Appleton and Campbell was excellent from our very first phone call when we realized our old furnace was not operating properly.

Fast service and a good deal given that we had little choice in replacing our 14 year old heater. Everyone that came out was personable, friendly, and efficient. They made us a priority because we have two little kids that were pretty cold in the house. Thanks to the team, we were cozy and warm within 24 hours of contacting them. Great company that we will use from here on out.

Chris came to investigate my furnace issue. He was informative as he presented my options. I scheduled the next available time for the furnace installation. Zack W. and Patrick B. were very respectful as they came into my home. They were thorough as they installed my new furnace and in the clean up. I appreciated Zack going over the final paperwork with me. I would go with them again!

Phenomenal work! Every person that performed services at our house was top notch. Shane, Dewayne, and Blake were professional, timely, efficient, organized, detail oriented and persistent to solve our electrical problems. From the beginning Shane gave us a great impression. He arrived to quote the work and troubleshoot, he took his time to identify the problem and provide recommendations. Dewayne and Blake arrived to perform the work a few days later and our panel looks spectacular.
Before leaving the job they spent their time to ensure everything was working properly and cleaned up after themselves. I recommend them for their quality of work and quality of customer service.

I called company to receive a quote. I got a lot of different communication from different managers which non of their word matched. Lastly I received a call from Sales Manager which introduced himself as a Travis Jackson. I have never received such cheap, unprofessional customer service in my life. Very disappointed that I called them and they are not appreciate customers time and patient. Someone need to reach out to CEO Mike so he can train his employee!

This is the second job I've scheduled with Appleton Campbell, and they have lived up to their reputation of great service - beginning with Ethan who came to evaluate the disposition of my furnace and was very responsive and scheduled me right away for service! Then, Zack and Stuart who were on time for the early morning service call. Both were kind and courteous and patient with all of my "layman" questions I asked during the installation process.
They were extremely professional and knowledgeable about the furnace installation, and Zack even reviewed with me the operation of the new equipment and provided me with a user handbook and Warrenty information. They kept the process clean and left my home with no evidence of a mess of an installation ever being done - except my home that was nice and cozy warm! They are my "go to" company for any future jobs and I trust their good counsel! Thank you, Appleton Campbell!

John and Mark were so kind and professional. They worked great as a team. They told me everything they were doing in a way I would understand. Mike who was the technician that came out to diagnose the problem was also very professional and kind. They all cleaned up before they left and left my house in better condition than it was when they got here! Would definitely recommend them to do any repair jobs that are needed for your house.

When a new furnace was our only option we were fortunate enough to get a next day installation. In the meantime, the company furnished us with several space heaters to use overnight. Stuart and Zach took the time to explain everything they planned to do and then how everything in our new system worked. We're very pleased with everyone who we've dealt with from AC and would happily recommend them.

Contacted Appleton Campbell to replace an old fluorescent light fixture with a new flat panel led fixture. They were polite, responsive, and were able to provide an appointment within a couple of business days. They did a great job communicating upcoming appointment. My technician Glenn arrived on schedule, gave me an up-front estimate, kept me informed of any potential problems, and quickly completed work. He made it look easy & did a stellar job. I'm very pleased with how this went & definitely would recommend.

Had a leak in the basement ceiling and called them on a Saturday, telling them that it wasn't an emergency and they could come out during regular house the following week. Set up an appointment the following Monday afternoon - I told them I couldn't be there but there would be an adult at the house. They said that someone had to be there that could authorize the amount of the bill.
I told them that if it was going to go over $500 then they needed to not do the work and give me a call. They called me on Monday (while I am at work - really hard to talk on the phone as I had to step out during a meeting) and said it would be $490.$10 less than the upper limit I had given them - suspicious.you bet! Since I didn't have any alternative, I told them to go ahead and to leave an invoice with my (adult) daughter.
When I got home, there was no invoice. I asked my daughter where it was, she said they would email it to me. I waited a few days but did not receive an email from them.so I called and asked them for an invoice. What they sent was basically an "one-liner" that didn't break down the amount charged (no hourly rate, no parts cost, no visit cost, no taxes.nothing)!
So I asked them for a more detailed invoice.and they said they would have someone call me about it. I waited again for a couple of days.and nothing (after calling them again the following day). They finally called me the following Friday and I again asked them for more details on the invoice.the response was that "this is not how we do our invoices".so I just went ahead and paid it. But I DO NOT recommend using these guys. Overpriced, in my opinion, and shady in their dealings. Would have been one star, but they did fix the leak.so there is that.

From the Customer Service Manager, Melissa Buchanan, who called us knowing we were looking for a new HVAC system, and let us know about special 0% financing, to Reid who came out and educated us on the different systems and possible savings, to Jessica, Jason and Scott who made sure we got the best deal possible, to the installers Jason Williams and Micah, his apprentice, you could not ask for more pleasant, helpful, knowledgeable people!
They know their stuff, not just out for a sale. They will be back twice in the next year (for free!) to check out our new system to make sure it is working perfectly. You really need to give this Team a try. They will win you over.

Worst ever. Avoid them like the plague. I would give them less than 1 star if I could. I needed help with plumbing and electrical repairs. The electrician cancelled the appointment at the time of arrival and said they had to attend another client of theirs (read bigger opportunity). By this time I had waited one week for this appointment. With the plumber, he arrived as promised but gave me a shock with a $1500 quote to replace flaps on my toilet flushes which now other plumbers have said they can do for less than $250. I regret calling this completely unprofessional business and hope others do not make the mistake of calling them for anything.

I was looking for an honest trustworthy plumbing company and I chose Appleton Campbell instead. I was having issues with my water heater accumulating water in the drip pan. I figured out it was the water expansion because of YouTube and my warranty company. I called Appleton Campbell on a recommendation from a neighbor. I spoke to the receptionist and told her that I needed help with my water expansion temp gauge.
She was very friendly and informed me that they have a special going for $29 for a service call fee. We made the appointment for the next day for 1230. The representative actually came about an hour early which was a plus. He spent a short time downstairs (maybe 2 minutes) before he informed us that our water heater has a slow leak and it will need to be replaced.
He stated that he would write out a couple of repair options for us. The first option--pay $250 annually for 6 years for a maintenance program. I told him we are not planning to be in this home that long. So he went with the second option which was a brand new water heater for $2900 which comes with a 6 year warranty. At this point I was confused because 1.
My problem should not cost more than $100 and that's being nice 2. my water heater is 3 years old and has a 10 year warranty. I then informed him that I called for the expansion and asked if he checked that. He answered no. Yes he admitted he didn't even check what I called the company for in the first place. I asked if he could check that first.
Well guess what? The pressure was 90 psi and it is suppose to be 60 psi. After he fixed that he STILL proceeded to sell us on a new water heater, which in his words "we will need sooner or later". We WILL need it, but not TODAY. So he left out again to "ask his boss" what he can do for us. He comes back with $1500 to help with replacing the water heater under our warranty.
We told him no and he went on about his way. If you are wondering about our slow leak. A week later and the pan is STILL BONE dry! All we needed was the temp gauge to be adjusted not the $248 maintenance program, not the $2900 new water heater and definitely not the $1500 warranty work. Needless to say we will not trust Appleton Campbell or that neighbor again.

The biggest scammers in the business! The repairmen are the sales people.the final time I had them at my house they wanted almost 700 dollars to replace two gfi outlets now mind the outlets are only 25.00 apiece and about ten minutes for each install. REALLY are you serious I asked him to leave and he said ok no problem without a care in the world. I now use Workman mechanical what a great company to deal with and they don't try to rob you at the end.

These guys are way overpriced. Last year Brennan's Heating and AC recharged 2 lbs. of freon for my AC system for $139. I saw Appleton Campbell had good reviews on Google so decided to give them a try. I ended up paying $487 for them to recharge less than 3.5 lbs. (not including the charge for them to come out here). That comes out to more than twice the price I paid Brennan's per lb. What's even more frustrating is that it appears that it's a flat price for a freon recharge, so they could have told me over the phone what this was going to cost when I told them I needed a recharge, and gone elsewhere. Instead, I had to wait 4 days for a technician to come out, at which point there was no time to get a second opinion. It's going to be 95 degrees in 2 days!
The service was fine, but I could have saved $100s by just going back to the guys I used last year. And you can be sure I won't be calling Appleton Campbell when it's time to replace my system.

AMAZING! Quick response! GREAT customer service! The team at Appleton Campbell (out of Warrenton, VA) just finished digging out and sealing up where the well pipe enters our home. From start to finish they are an impressive group! I would use them again and recommend them most highly! You can hardly tell they just dug down 2 1/2 feet. IMPRESSIVE!

Two reasons I give them a single star: one - I cannot give them less; two - the service guys that came out did not charge me the $49 "inspection fee" to give me the estimate. (Unlike most other companies, they typically do not do free estimates.) The services I needed and their prices to perform were: Install owner provided kitchen faucet ($647), owner provided garbage disposer ($645), owner provided dishwasher ($863) and hook all plumbing back up post new counter install.
During the inspection, they determined I also needed: kitchen sink waste repipe ($416) and replace emergency stop valve ($993). (The emergency stop valve replacement would have purportedly required cutting out part of my wall for access.) While here, they also suggested that other plumbing in my house also needed upgraded (and that may well be, but I haven't had any issues with it) and that my electrical outlets, etc also needed upgraded (which, again, may well be, but I've had no issues.) They also tried to push their Home Savings Agreement contract.
They did offer a $250 discount (on services over $2500) which brought the total to $3314. I also had a coupon for $75 off, bringing the grand total to $3239. (choke) I sort of chuckled at them and said, "No, thank you. Not interested." They sort of smirked back and said, "Well, you're going to need it all done." I installed the disposer myself. Took me all of about 25 minutes. Savings: $645 I installed the faucet myself. Took about 2.5 hours with multiple breaks to walk dogs, grab a bite to eat, deal with some work issues and stretch my back periodically. Savings: $647 I paid someone else to come deal with the rest, and he fixed a few other things while here. (And he did NOT have to tear out the wall.) I paid him $500, which included a very generous tip. (AND, he said he would not have charged me any additional to install disposer or faucet, but that I did a good job.) Savings: $1447 Total savings: $2739 If you like pouring money down the proverbial drain, please, feel free to hire Appleton Campbell.

Called Appleton Campbell to hook up a newly replaced gas meter to existing gas line in house following upgraded service to the neighborhood performed by Columbia Gas. My call was promptly ad professionally answered; I was given a window on Friday when the tech would arrive: 2pm-5pm. The house has a gas furnace -- all it has for heating. Getting this done soon and right was essential.
I took the afternoon off work to ensure I was home before 2pm should the tech arrive early. After about 330pm and no tech, I called and was told he was running behind "lots of emergency calls" (i.e. people like me without heat). I used my short time on the phone to reconfirm that he'd be able to get this hooked up: a gas meter, black pipe work to hook up to house.
I was put on hold so they could double-check and was told "yes, he'll be able to get you up and running". Long story short: he didn't show until just before 7 PM. Polite, professional, and within 2 min of looking at it said he didn't have what he'd need on the truck and would have to come back tomorrow. I ask if it's atypical and am told 'no, it's pretty standard'.?
Then I ask how much to connect it and he plays with an ipad for about a minute and says labor would be $780 something plus the parts. The meter is about 18" from the pipe into the house. I expressed shock, he said, "That's just the cost of doing business." Maybe with Appleton Campbell. I had the job done for well less then half the cost the following day by another company who showed up when they said they would, had what they needed like they said they would, and got the job done right. Shop around.

Just had a service tech leave my home after discussing replacement of a 20 yr old central air unit. Jerry was a pleasant guy but the estimates he generated were massively overpriced (I have family that's owned a Carrier HVAC installation company a few states away for 50 years and had called them to discuss which units I should consider and fair pricing for the unit and installation) From the info my cousin provided Appleton Campbell's bid would result there reaping a profit margin of around 85%!. 45%-50% margin is considered fair for experienced pro's in the business.
He also insisted that I had to purchase their $400+ digital wifi thermostat even though I have a 2 week old Ecobee SmartThermostat that has more functionality and is highly rated. When I asked him to rebid the system without their thermostat I was told that it was part of the package and couldn't be removed. Apparently the company does not negotiate ANYTHING to gain business.
No way I do business with that mindset. Also, last year they refused to service our 6/mo old, still under warranty washing machine even though they were listed as a factory warranty repair station for the brand. Their reason for not fixing it. "You didn't buy it from us". I'm guessing they thrive on folks who simply know nothing about HVAC pricing. P.T. Barnum had it right.

The receptionists, schedulers, front office are very professional, friendly and customer service oriented. The entire company is professional. My gripe is that they seem to be more of SALES people than actual technicians. One bad experience included a plumber who was cussing and griping the entire time. He was haphazard and I actually witnessed him SAW through one of our copper pipes.
The plumber's mistake caused a literal and figurative mess. It was complicated to get the repairs done and reimbursement. The straw that broke the camel's back was a few years back when the A/C technicians refused to work on our unit due to some mold and instead wanted to sell us a new unit. We found a new HVAC guy who took about 10 mins to correct the mold issue and has serviced our unit since then for 2+ years.
It works perfectly. The most recent plumber did NOT fix the problem when he came. Instead he tried to place blame on other issues in our house. After we could prove the problem, he came back. In the meantime, he kept trying to sell us a new piece of equipment totally unrelated to the actual equipment that broke. I like them because they are professional, neat, polite, prompt and friendly to deal with.
But their "slickness" and emphasis on SALES totally overrides any good work they may do. IMO, look elsewhere. Look for a SMALL company without so much overhead and red tape. They're too big for their britches.

I have been working with Appleton Campbell for a YEAR and the experiences have been unwanted but exceptional. No one wants to have their sump pump die, but mine did this week. Today Ethan and David came by to check on the new furnace and airconditiong system I had installed last year. THANK GOD they came today. It was a rescheduled visit, but I found out my basement had flooded a bit.
I had my HVAC unit inspected and now they are installing a new sump pump Monday. I was hoping Appleton and Campbell could provide guidance as to what was happening and who to call to fix it. They are doing everything. Last year I was purchasing my Mom's house as she had passed away. A week before closing the HVAC unit went out. They came out and a day later I had a team of people replacing the system.
I have natural gas and pay a monthly fee instead of paying a huge amount the months usage spikes. This new HVAC system is so efficient that I had 4.5 months where I didn't have to pay a bill because I ended up with a large credit.

Outrageously high prices. $900 to replace a frozen pipe connection behind the drywall of a utility sink - WOW! And a $6000 estimate to replace an existing water softener system; plumber wouldn't even turn on the existing system (already hooked up) because he thought it might start leaking. But he's the plumber, right? Consistently disappointed with this company.

Told me $49 to look at HVAC. Tech comes and tells me it will be $127 more if he has to lift the cover. Told him no twice. 5 min later told me can't be fixed, new system 13k, and he charged me for taking off cover! Took longer to write the estimate than look at system. $176 for no service. Had two contractors out today, replacement cost by both is $5200, 1 says he can can get it running for under $500, and the first contractor noted that the system had been turned off at the unit. Appleton Tech made sure to show me that my thermostat would not come on w/out the batteries in it (he took them out), because the system couldn't be fixed, but it was because he turned it off at the unit and took out the breaker. Tech was friendly the whole very short visit, even as he pressed for the $127 upcharge that I refused, and even as he wrote out the ticket and estimate. Truly horrible business.

We had a leak in our water softener system. I called in the morning and they gave me the expectation that someone would be there late afternoon early evening on a Saturday (individual came after 8 pm). I had to keep following up throughout the day to make sure they were still coming. That is not why I am giving a low rating though as I understand things happen.
Not only could they not fix it the leak, but they suggested I replace the whole system for $5000. Once the individual left I also noticed a tiny leak in the copper pipe connecting to the system which the plumber did not even notice/fix at the very least. Needless to say I called a different company and had the entire pipe replaced and the softener fixed for $400. I will say everyone I came into contact for were extremely friendly, and I know people who have had good experiences, but maybe for these types of issues go elsewhere.

Very Poor, rude unprofessional Technician who showed up for an appointment I had set up to install a water filtration system I had purchased from a renowned Hardware store. Technician was very argumentative and kept saying the system I purchased was not good and the reviews given by other customers that I mentioned to him, on the system were faulty. I was forced to ask him to leave as he continued to be very unprofessional and argumentative. I hope this is not the case with most of his appointments with this Company.

I had them give me an estimate on installing a new heat pump. The technician wrote out an estimate and left it with me to consider. He told me I was getting a great deal. I called the factory to ask about the availability of parts in case it needed maintenance. The response was surprise. "That's an obsolete unit, " I was told. My guess is the A-C "technician" had a buddy with an unsold unit in his shop that was gathering dust. Needless to say, end of conversation.

I had a really good experience with this company when they replaced my well pump in Jan, 2016. They arrived the day after I called and fixed it by 4:00 pm. They treated me with respect and were up-front with the pricing. They even told me that my well line was shorter than expected (I never would have known the difference) and discounted the cost to reflect the change in depth. I can't speak to their HVAC knowledge but would recommend them to anyone with well-water issues without hesitation.

I knew my heating and a/c unit, was very old and had passed it's expiration date by about 7 years at least.so I wasn't surprised in August when my a/c cut out. I figured that it's the end of summer and the heat works, so I'll just save money now and get it looked at in the Spring. Last week when we got the 4 inches of snow and ice my heating unit finally died. Ugh.
It was soooo cold. At 10:00 AM, I called a company located in New Baltimore next to Spitony's. Lady was rude and stated a high rate to have someone even come look at it. No ETA. I called again at 12:30 PM. She was rude and told me he would be here shortly. I called at 3:00 PM. She said again he'll be here shortly. So before I hung up, I told her to cancel my request. Ridiculous. - I called Appleton Campbel at 3:15 PM.
The lady on the phone was so nice. She said she'll have someone at my house in 30 min. There was a knock on my door 30 min later! Two guys put on their shoe covers and walked in to hear about the issues. Nicest guys! They listened and understood the issue. Spoke to me like a friend would. They showed me inside the panels of my indoor unit. Mold, discolored wiring, wires that had tape on them so old the tape crumbled when he tried to unwrap it.
It was disgusting and honestly, something that was beyond repair. The outdoor unit as well was just rundown and a peice of junk in this day and time. - When they suggested to get a full new unit instead of trying to fix it, I already knew that's what I had to do, so it wasn't like they were giving me a sales pitch. You could plainly see there was no "fix". - I Signed papers and understood the financing.
Two days later, here come the techs (2) at 8:30 AM as planned, with all brand new equipment. Inside unit, outside unit, re-ran a new copper piping through my ceiling to the outside. (Old one was too thin for the pressure that was trying to run through it). Even replaced my thermostat. - They never asked for a thing. They barely spoke as they knew I was working from home.
They totally knew what they were doing. They put down floor coverings and even brought their own broom and swept my floors when they were done! Never for one minute were they standing idle. Never once. - When they were finished at 2:30 PM, they gave me a tutorial. WOW! This sucker is huge and really nice looking! The thermostat I can work from my phone while I'm away from the house.
I can even upload pictures onto it like a digital frame! LOL- That's crazy! With my new system comes of course, a great warranty as well as a Spring and Autumn system check for free this year! Appleton Campbell does not use contractors and they clean up after themselves very nicely. They delivered what I needed in a timely and very friendly and professional manner. I'm so glad I called them and cancelled the other people. Thanks Appleton Campbell!
