I am a homeowner doing a small bathroom remodel. A friend who does construction refereed me to Martin Palasch, a project manager at MC Construction. Martin was going to put the drywall on. My friend builds amazing buildings so I knew any referral of his was a quality referral. I spoke with Martin and he said normally they don't do small jobs but as a favor they would do mine.
I wish he wouldn't have said that. I wish he would have just said "sorry you're job is too small and we won't do it." Over the next 2 weeks I called, emailed, and texted Martin several times. He wasn't straight forward with me-he wouldn't give me dates or times to inspect the home. He wouldn't give me estimates. I told him that this was our only bathroom and it's important we get it finished ASAP because we need a toilet.
My wife is pregnant and due in 2 months so it's hard for her to deal with the remodel. She has to go to her parents home to use the toilet. He kept saying he was busy and when he can sit down he'll get me some estimates. I had no idea how long that was going to be. If I knew that his "busy" means you don't get estimates until the day the project starts I would have found someone else.
I still didn't have any estimates from Martin and the day he was supposed to start was fast approaching. I decided I needed to find a backup drywall installer because Martin was giving me the run around so much. Sadly, all the drywall contractors couldn't meet my start date-I hadn't given them enough time. But all of them meet with me and gave me estimates in a reasonable time.
I was hoping Martin would pull through for me because if not-this would cause my project to take twice as much time. As you can see where this is going. The day Martin was supposed to start working he wasn't there and no estimates. He said he would have supplies there the next day. No supplies came the next day but he didn't have an estimate. It was almost twice as much as the two other quotes I received.
I called Martin to tell him how frustrated I was with his communication and lack of commitment. I called him to tell him how disappointed I was. He told me they do $100,000 and he doesn't have time for my bathroom. He said he was busy and he doesn't need to negotiate his price. I tried to explain to him I'm not asking for a change in price. I was just trying to explain how frustrating it's been working with him. He told me to use someone else and he doesn't need these problems. Then he hung-up on me. One of the most unprofessional individuals I have ever worked with.
